A “explosão” da carreira de Sabrina Carpenter não foi tão repentina como algumas pessoas pensam. A primeira canção: “Taste”, nos introduz ao álbum com uma melodia chiclete, e teve direito a videoclipe sangrento e cinematográfico com participação da atriz Jenna Ortega. “Espresso” e “Please Please Please” já eram singles consagrados mas duas faixas que me conquistaram foram “Good Graces” e “Bed Chem”, suco do Pop/R&B dos anos 90. Mesmo assim, todas as músicas do álbum se destacam de alguma forma. Em “Sharpest Tool”, a artista aborda manipulação e falta de comunicação no relacionamento. Já em “Coincidence”, Sabrina é cínica e traz desconfianças sobre as ações e desculpas do parceiro.
Em “Dumb and Poetic”, Sabrina escreve sobre sentir atração superficial por outra pessoa (“Você é tão idiota e poético / Costumo me apaixonar por esses, gosto da estética”) e sobre a falta de profundidade que é revelada com o tempo. “Slim Pickins” faz uso do country e do humor ácido da cantora para retratar as decepções e frustrações encontradas durante as tentativas de viver um romance no mundo moderno; “Juno” faz referência à deusa romana do casamento e traz expectativas e planos otimistas do começo de um relacionamento com uma melodia dançante.
Já “Lie to Girls”, é uma composição emotiva que aborda como certas vezes podemos distorcer a verdade para que se encaixe melhor na narrativa que preferimos acreditar (“Amamos confundir borboletas com um ataque cardíaco”). E finalmente, a faixa final “Don’t Smile” finaliza o álbum de forma agridoce, com a vontade de ser lembrada e o medo de ser substituída depois de um término.
Short n’Sweet é um álbum divertido e versátil com uma mistura de referências que funcionam, e dá destaque merecido ao humor ácido da artista. Referências dos anos 90, disco, vocais country, senso de humor e sensualidade tornam o álbum marcante e cheio de personalidade.
